How the waters of Grassy Narrows were poisoned
July 2016: The Ontario Superior Court of Justice rules in favour of Weyerhauser, declaring that the wide-ranging indemnity Ontario gave Great Lakes Paper in 1985 still applies, and exempts the company from monitoring requirements.
Sept. 2016: Japanese experts in mercury poisoning report that 90 per cent of the population of Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations show signs of exposure to the toxin, including people born years after the dumping of mercury ended.

Renewables - Not Nuclear
Citing a surplus of power, the Wynne gov't pulled the plug Tues. on its Large Renewable Procurement (LRP) process for acquiring wind and solar power at highly competitive prices. But the reason Ontario has a glut of power is the gov't's insistance on keeping high cost nuclear stations running despite plenty of better options.
http://www.cleanairalliance.org/lrp/

Please sign our petition to close the Pickering Nuclear Station in 2018 when its licence expires rather than extending it till 2028, OPG’s request.

Command and Control
Mon. Oct. 3, 9 p.m.
Hot Docs Cinema, 506 Bloor W.
Near the end of the Cold War, human error nearly caused a nuclear warhead to explode in Arkansas. The event was kept secret until only recently and, if the warhead had combusted, its power would have been three times that of every bomb dropped in WWII combined. This retelling of the chilling and Dr. Strangelovian nightmare is directed by Robert Kenner (Food, Inc., Merchants of Doubt) and based on a critically-acclaimed book by Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation). "Equal parts history lesson, cautionary tale and nerve-rattling thriller, this unsettling production uses all manner of nonfiction devices to elicit both horror and outrage over the precariousness of our deadliest arsenals" (Variety). How do you manage weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them?

Youth Town Hall
Tuesday, Oct. 4, 7 – 9:30 pm
519 Community Centre, 519 Church St, 106 Eastroom South
Our current electoral system does not encourage political parties to work on issues that matter to young people. They say we're an apathetic generation, but we are political and engaged in all sorts of ways, working hard to improve our communities.
But in 2015 more young people voted than ever before, and they helped elect the Liberals in on a platform that promised change. So when it comes to voting reform, we need to make sure that the voices of young people make it directly to PM Trudeau and the committee studying voting reform. And there’s only about a month left before the government’s voting reform consultations wrap up, so we have to move fast and spread the word. The event will be roundtable format - so that you have a chance to engage in group discussion and express your opinion directly. Your voice will be included in a report submitted directly to the government committee on Electoral Reform. This event is hosted by Leadnow and is part of a series happening across Canada.

Electoral Reform Town Hall
Tuesday October 4, 6:30 p.m.
Ralph Thornton Centre, 765 Queen Street East
As part of the public consultation on electoral reform, government has invited all MPs to host town halls on electoral reform. Almost all MPs except the Conservatives (with rare exception) are doing so. The feedback from each town hall will be reported to ERRE to inform their recommendation. Please show up and invite friends to voice your support for proportional representation.
- Proportional Representation: 30% of the vote should equal 30% of the seats
- Voter Equality: every voter should be able to elect an MP who reflects his/her values
- Diversity: Our Parliament should reflect our diversity, including the political diversity within each region
- Collaboration: proportional representation means parties working together, and policies supported by parties representing a majority of voters

Poverty Inc.
Friday, Oct. 7, 7 pm
OISE, 252 Bloor West, Rm 5-280
This documentary film by Michael Matheson Miller challenges current perceptions of global charity. The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of the development narrative. But the results have been in some cases catastrophic. Drawing on perspectives gathered from over 150 interviews shot over 4 years in 20 countries, Poverty Inc. explores the hidden side of “doing good.” From disaster relief to TOMs Shoes, from adoptions to agricultural subsidies, Poverty Inc. pulls back the curtain on the poverty industrial complex - the multi-billion dollar market of NGOs, multilateral agencies, and for-profit aid contractors. Are they propagating a system in which the poor stay poor while the rich get hipper? Mike Balkwill, Provincial Organizer, Put Food in the Budget campaign, will lead off the discussion on the film.
