Pickering Nuclear Station: 12 more yrs or time to call it quits?
With speakers: Ian Fairlie, expert on radioactivity; Jack Gibbons, energy
economist with Ontario Clean Air Alliance, John Coo, Green Cross Canada and
Angela Bischoff, OCAA Mobilizer
Tuesday, October 25, 7 - 9 pm
Pickering Rec Complex, Mtng. Rm. B

Wednesday, October 26, 7 - 9 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (near Bloor and Bathurst))
https://www.facebook.com/events/164556970662161/

Pickering is one of the world’s oldest, largest and highest-cost nuclear
stations. Its 6 operating reactors are surrounded by 2.2 million people
(within 30 kms). Designed to last 30 years, it’s now 45, and OPG is applying
for a licence to run it till it’s 57. To add insult to injury, Pickering’s
power is surplus energy, and we subsidize the station $900 million per year
to keep open. Meanwhile, it has a long history of accidents. What are the
safety, health and economic concerns of running Pickering to the ground? Why
would we risk an accident when we have lower-cost renewable options
including conservation and water power from Quebec? What about thyroid
cancer and the KI pills issued by OPG? Learn more and sign our petition to
close Pickering. http://www.cleanairalliance.org/close-pickering/

Colliding Dreams
Wednesday, Oct. 26, Doors open 6:15 pm, Program starts at 7 pm
Alliance Française, 24 Spadina Rd.
Join JSpaceCanada and Canadian Friends of Peace Now for a screening of this
acclaimed documentary. A film of ideas and a film of history, a thorough and
engrossing look at the root causes of the tortured relationship between
Israel and the Palestinians. The century-old conflict in the Middle East
continues to play a central role in world politics. And yet, amidst this
fierce, often-lethal controversy, the Zionist idea of a homeland for Jews in
the land of ancient Israel remains little understood and its meanings often
distorted. Colliding Dreams presents a gripping exploration of Zionism’s
meaning, history and future.
General Admission $15 pre-registered. $20 at door. $10 students (with
ID)/unwaged.

Northern Anishnaabe Women Speak Out on Off Reserve Urban Living
Wednesday October 26, 7 - 10 p.m.
Native Canadian Centre of Toronto, 16 Spadina Road
Join us for an evening of discussion with Darlene Necan, spokesperson for
Off-Reserve Members of the Ojibway Nation of Saugeen No.258. For the past 10
years Darlene has been fighting for housing and equal rights for off-reserve
members of her band. Throughout this political struggle, she has faced
constant challenges from the Ontario government that have forced her to live
away from her land, in the city, in impossible poverty. Enough is enough.
>From her Anishnaabe woman perspective, Darlene will be speaking out on the
injustices of poverty and racism at the hands of the Ontario welfare system,
and the reality of off-reserve urban living. Speakers from No More Silence
and Ontario Coalition Against Poverty will introduce their organizations and
share updates on their work. Fundraiser - A Silent Auction featuring
beautiful crafts will raise funds to support the Saugeen women in their
struggle for housing and equal rights for off-reserve members of their band.
Pay What You Can, suggested donation $10. Supported by No More Silence,
Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, and CUPE 3903 First Nations Solidarity
