The paradigm of decarbonization that's guided utility sector investments for the past decade is now up in the air: regs in danger, renewables chopped, fossil fuels boosted, decabonization consensus hooped.

Bust traffic congestion: How Toronto can raise more than half a billion dollars for transit
A levy of $1.50 a day per commercial parking spot and a highway toll of 10 cents per kilometre could raise more than $500 million a year for the City of Toronto. That money could help run more buses and streetcars, clean the air and finally get the city moving! Please take a moment to ask Mayor Tory and your city councillor to back a parking levy and a highway toll.

The Age of Consequences
Daily Sun. Nov. 13 - Wed. Nov. 16
Bloor Hot Docs, 506 Bloor W (at Bathurst)
Ice caps are melting, water levels are rising, deserts are growing—but what’s the human impact? In this Hot Docs hit, award-winning filmmaker Jared P. Scott cleverly and convincingly connects the dots between climate change and conflict. Here, climate change's impact on resource scarcity, mass migration and border tensions is given a fresh perspective through the lens of national security. “It is not possible to discuss the future of national and international security without addressing climate change,” says U.S. Air Force Gen. Donald Hoffman. “Food shortages, droughts [and] floods will be catalysts for conflict.” Complete with state-of-the-art graphics and unflinching case-study analysis, The Age of Consequences is a compelling and urgent call to action.

Do Not Resist
Nov. 14 - Nov. 23
Bloor Hot Docs, 506 Bloor W (at Bathurst)
If you know the names Michael Brown and Freddie Gray, you may have wondered: why are so many black men dying at the hands of police officers? And if you’ve seen the resultant protests in Ferguson and Baltimore, you may have further asked: are those police officers or army units? Do Not Resist offers a powerful response with its fast-paced exposé of the militarization of US police departments. This Tribeca Film Festival Best Documentary winner and Hot Docs favourite puts viewers in the center of the action—from a ride-along with a South Carolina SWAT team, to a police training seminar teaching the importance of “righteous violence”—and crafts a damning picture of an institutional complicity that can kill.

Flood The Room - Toronto Climate Action
Mon. Nov. 14, 7 - 9 p.m.
Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St W, Committee Room 1
Recognizing that climate change is one of the most important issues of our time, the City of Toronto established “TransformTO” to produce a framework that will help the city identify the path to sustainability and to suggest key starting points where we will need to begin, with a goal of greenhouse gas emission reductions of 80% by 2050. We need to send City Hall a strong message that Torontonians support immediate and transformative actions on climate change. On Monday, the Subcommittee on Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation will be meeting at City Hall to review the new climate action plan. The plan will highlight key actions the City plans to take to reduce our emissions. Let’s flood the room to show our support for actions on climate change. RSVP to attend and we’ll follow up with more information.

Private Profits versus Public Policy: The Pharmaceutical Industry and the Canadian State
Book Launch with Joel Lexchin
Wed. Nov. 16, 7 - 9 p.m.
Tranzac Club at 292 Brunswick St. (just south of Bloor)
The widespread condemnation of drastic price increases on life-saving drugs highlights our growing dependency on and vulnerability to international pharmaceutical conglomerates. However, aren’t the interests of the public supposed to supersede the pursuit of private profit? In his new work, Private Profits versus Public Policy, Dr. Joel Lexchin addresses this question as he examines how public policy with respect to the pharmaceutical industry has evolved in Canada over the past half century. Although the Canadian government is supposed to regulate the industry to serve the needs of public health, waves of deregulatory reforms and intellectual property rights legislation have shifted the balance of power in favour of these companies’ quest for profit. Joel Lexchin offers a series of recommendations to tip the scale back in the public’s favour. This enlightening work is the first book that deals exclusively with the pharmaceutical industry in Canada in over thirty years.
