What's the Harm in Taking an Antidepressant?
We know that all drugs have side effects. That’s just part of the deal right? But is it really possible that an antidepressant can cause a sane person to act like a cold-blooded criminal?

Lowering the Bar: How PMDD (Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder) Went from an Idea to a Diagnosis
Taken together, these studies failed to provide clear evidence in support of the existence of a specific premenstrual negative mood syndrome in the general population. This puzzlingly widespread belief needs challenging, as it perpetuates negative concepts linking female reproduction with negative emotionality.

Symposium: Combating Corruption in Health Care and Pharmaceuticals
Mon. Nov. 28, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Vivian and David Campbell Conference Facility, 1 Devonshire Place, Room 208N North House, U of T
The governance of public health, health care and medical research is among the most strategically important aspects of public policy -- and one of the most challenging because of the huge potential for corruption. It is important to identify structural weaknesses in the current governance of the health sector. These weaknesses often constitute incentives to various kinds of corruption, legal or not, that betray the fundamental objectives of health care, public policy and medical science. Free.

Mandatory Vaccination – Freedom of Choice at Risk
Monday, Nov. 28, 7 - 9 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (at Bloor)
Vaccine Choice Canada examines the drumbeat of mandatory vaccination which has gotten louder, nastier, and more threatening in recent years. At the same time, the corporate-controlled media has imposed a strict blackout on voices attempting to shed light on the health catastrophe unleashed by aggressive vaccination programs on several generations of children. The dissenting voices include parents of vaccine-injured children, vaccine risk-awareness groups, and scientists whose research is revealing the biochemical and molecular pathways by which vaccines can derail normal brain and immune system development in young children – and even trigger devastating autoimmune diseases. This emerging knowledge is being suppressed by mainstream medicine and public health policy makers whose goal is to defend the vaccine program at all costs. Discounted as collateral damage are the untold numbers of children and adults whose lives have been devastated by vaccine injuries. $5

The Power of Community: Renewable Energy & Citizen Participation in Ontario
Tues. Nov. 29, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
YWCA, 87 Elm St
When it comes to maximizing the economic benefits and public support for clean energy sources like wind and solar, community participation and ownership matters. The Power of Community, a new report by TREC and FCPC, quantifies those benefits for Ontarians for the first time, demonstrating how community-ownership of renewable energy can generate twice as many jobs, result in $2 of economic opportunity for every $1 spent, and increase public support for renewables, by creating local investment opportunities for everyday people. Here's your chance to hear from environmental and community power leaders about how connecting people through community-owned green power projects will help Ontario and other jurisdictions meet their clean energy targets, on the path to a 100% renewable energy future.

Toxic Trespass Film Screening and Discussion
Wed. Nov. 30, 7 p.m.
6th Floor, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), U of T, 252 Bloor Street West
This NFB co-production is an investigation into the effects of the chemicals we are all exposed to in our daily lives. The film begins with the filmmaker Barri Cohen’s own 10-year-old daughter, whose blood carries carcinogens like benzene and the long-banned DDT. Then, it heads out to Windsor and Sarnia: Canadian toxic hotspots, and highlights the devastating health impacts effecting the Aamjiwnaang First Nations Community of Sarnia surrounded by refineries and petrochemical plants. The film presents passionate activists working for positive change, along with doctors and scientists who see evidence of links between environmental pollution and health problems and helps us learn about and act on the implications of environmental racism and the need for environmental justice. We will have a follow-up discussion with the film’s executive producer and primary research consultant, Dorothy Goldin Rosenberg and Heather Marshall from Toronto Environmental Alliance, who will tell us about the INHALE project.

Parkland in Toronto – the path to right relationship
Wed. Nov 30, 6:30 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor W., 7th floor Peace lounge
From occupation to connection. We all yearn for a connection to the land. Our hearts crave a restored relationship with all of creation. The indigenous people in this territory enjoyed that prior to contact. Through this series, we have been exploring ways to re-indigenize Toronto. Currently our focus in on the parks and public realm. In this session, Clara MacCallum Fraser and Christine Migwans join us for a dialogue on what it means to restore right relationship with the land in Toronto, and with each other--from both indigenous and non-indigenous perspectives. Clara and Christine will offer some theoretical framing for our conversation, exploring how urban planning policy and practice could be informed by Indigenous consciousness and ways of knowing—and ultimately become a fulfillment of treaty.

No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age
Thursday, Dec. 1, 7 - 10 p.m.
United Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil St.
With Jane McAlevey, Author of No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age, and Raising Expectations and Raising Hell: My Decade Fighting for the Labor Movement. Income inequality has reached levels not seen since the 1920s. Labor unions’ membership is in decline, and popular opinion has turned against them. Why do progressives in the United States keep losing on so many issues, and what is to be done? McAlevey investigates the reasons behind the recent failures of unions and lays out a way forward for the progressive movement. Progressives can win, McAlevey argues, but lack the organized power to enact significant change, to outlast their bosses in labor fights, and to hold elected leaders accountable. NO SHORTCUTS shows that what victorious movements have in common is the use of grassroots mass organizing rather than the top-down strategies such as advocacy that have recently gained favor. Much more than just a cogent analysis, NO SHORTCUTS explains exactly how progressives can go about rebuilding powerful movements at work, in communities, and at the ballot box. Sponsored by: Centre for Social Justice, Global Labour Research Centre at York University, Socialist Project, York University Departments of Geography, Social Science, Political Science
