Ralph Nader Denounces Trump Budget as Corporatist, Militarist & Racist: "The
Mask is Off"
Longtime consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader
responds to President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget proposal to Congress, which
calls for an unprecedented $54 billion increase in military spending while
slashing environmental, housing, diplomatic and educational programs. "The
mask is off. The fangs are now out," Nader says. "He is collaborating with
what is, on the record, the most vicious, ignorant Republican Party in its
history, since 1854." Video interview.

Trump’s budget takes a sledgehammer to the EPA (Environmental Protection
Agency)
These environmental protection regs and programs have taken decades to
build. The proposed US budget would slash the EPA’s budget by 31%, cutting
3,200 positions, or more than 20% of the agency’s current workforce.

Disarming Conflict: How Wars End
Wednesday, March 22, 7 - 9 p.m.
Room UC 152, University College, 15 King’s College Circle, U of T
Wars fought over the past quarter century have been a spectacular failure.
The overwhelming majority end in military stalemate and are settled at the
negotiating table, with the grievances that led to the war still unresolved.
Famed peace activist Ernie Regehr shows that force cannot simply override or
transcend the social, political, and economic realities of conflict. War
prevention, Regehr argues, is more successful when security policies address
the conditions that most directly affect people’s lives and that are most
instrumental in generating deep grievances and the despairing conclusion
that there are no alternatives to the violence. Disarming Conflict sets out
approaches, initiatives, and policies that steer away from the futility of
fighting and promote non-military efforts towards “winning the peace.” Free
Public Lecture With Ernie Regehr, Senior Fellow, The Simons Foundation
Vancouver. A Science for Peace event.

Hate
Wednesday, March 22, 7 - 9 p.m.
Council Chamber, Toronto City Hall, Queen and Bay
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is
observed annually on 21 March. On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and
killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa,
against the apartheid pass laws. United Nations General Assembly proclaimed
the day in 1966, calling on the international community to redouble its
efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. Join a focused
discussion on the kind of future we want to share together as Canadians in
these uncertain times.

What Would Doug Have Thought? - The Canadian Environment at 150
Wednesday, March 22, 4:10 - 5:30 pm
Room ES B149 (basement), Earth Sciences Building, 5 Bancroft Avenue, U of T
Douglas Pimlott Memorial Lecture with Mark Pimlott, Policy Analyst;
Legislation and Conservation, Department of Environment, Nunavut. Mark is
not so presumptuous or vain as to imagine that he could speak for his
father, however by providing information and personal insights about Doug
Pimlott, and about his belief systems and personal philosophies, the
presenter hopes to provide some insights into the forces which drove his
father’s love for wildlife and for wildland, and about Doug’s mission to
work to achieve a greater level of environmental integrity and harmony. In
the process, he raises questions about the state of the Canadian environment
on the 150th anniversary of this great and vast country.

Stressed out? How to Improve Health & Increase Productivity
Wed. March 22, 5:30 – 7:30 P.M.
Online livestream
Do you feel overworked? Stressed out? Burnt out? Not as productive as you
could be? You're not alone. Statistics suggest that work is interfering more
and more with people's personal time, and that stress and burnout are at
near-epidemic levels. The cost to organizations and governments is in the
billions, and the cost to workers comes not only in the form of lower job
effectiveness, but often in their mental and physical well-being. Job
demands, technology, and organizational norms and culture tie people to
their work in a manner that is unprecedented in modern times, but the
question is: Are we really working as smart as we can? In spite of recent
advances in some countries (e.g., Sweden and France) the answer seems to be
no. In this talk, Prof. Trougakos will share ways in which you can work
smarter, be more productive, and live a healthier life, while actually
working less.

some lessons in order to build out capacity to fight back. Presented by

Bloor Hot Docs (at Bathurst)
>From the director of March of the Penguins comes this extraordinary

sweeping cinematography, we are introduced to the story of pioneering
climate scientist Claude Lorius and his ground-breaking findings. Now 83, he
reflects on his adventurous life and love of the natural world he has seen
change before his very eyes. A bittersweet tribute to a life of passion,
reflections on Lorius’s formidable career are set against delightful and
breathtaking encounters with penguins, ice floes and shooting stars.
