We Believe Survivors of Canadian Mining & Extractive Industries - Public
Forum
Mon. April 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Room 1073, Sidney Smith Hall, 100 St. George St, U of T
After years of denying cases of sexual assault, Canadian mining company
Barrick Gold compensated 119 women and girls who were victims of sexual
violence by mine security to the tune of ~$10,000 each for these abuses, but
had them sign an agreement that they could never sue the company. Eleven of
the women refused this remedy package and threatened to sue the company,
resulting in a higher out of court settlement. Since that time, the 119
women who originally accepted the money from Barrick have organized into
women's groups and started to demand more dignified treatment from the
company. Many others have never received any compensation at all, as
allegations of sexual violence continue. From gaslighting tactics, to the
cultural and legal barriers that prevent women from sharing their stories,
we will look at the systemic forces that work to silence victims of abuse.
We will also hear from courageous women who have self-organized with other
survivors to tell their stories and demand accountability. Hosted by MISN:
Mining Injustice Solidarity Network and Silence is Violence - University of
Toronto

We Believe Survivors of Barrick Gold - Rally
Tues. April 25, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
255 Front St. W.
Every year, we gather outside of the Annual General Meeting of Canadian
mining giant Barrick gold, to amplify the voices of those directly impacted
by their operations globally. This year, we are shining the spotlight on
gendered violence at Barrick's mines, by highlighting and supporting
survivors of sexual assault. This year, come to hear updates of the
struggles against Barrick's abuses at mine sites around the world, with a
special focus on women-led organizing.

Lysistrata - A Climate-Based Sex Comedy
Wed. April 26, 6 - 9 pm
Scotiabank Studio Theatre, Pia Bouman School for Ballet, 6 Noble St (near
Queen and Dufferin)
Adapted from the classic by Aristophanes, Lysistrata is a climate-based sex
comedy presented by Toronto350. It is the not-too-distant future and the
world's climate has reached a devastating state. Despite the best intentions
of the world’s governments, carbon emissions have continued to grow. As a
result, there have been large changes in, what is euphemistically referred
to as, “the weather”. Wild water is untouchable (like the Niagara River
today), the air is breathable, but unhealthy (like Beijing today), song
birds are extinct (pigeons thrive) and rates of infertility and impotence
among humans are high. Freak weather is common, destructive and often
deadly. Slavery has been revived to cope with the huge numbers of displaced
people. The world’s economy continues to grow, to the detriment of the
biosphere. That is, until a few brave women decide to use one of their
greatest powers to change the world. Join us for this live reading of David
Craig's adaptation.

Naming and Confronting Subtle Violence in Everyday Church Work - With Lee
Ann McKenna
Friday, April 28, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Emmanuel College, 75 Queen's Park Cres.
Subtle violence (known as micro-aggressions) are brief, everyday exchanges
that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group
membership. These exchanges can occur in verbal, behavioural, and
environmental form and communicate subtle messages of hostility,
degradation, or insult based upon the target’s race, gender, sexual
orientation, gender identity, class, ability, ethnicity, national heritage,
or religion. Perpetrators often engage in micro-aggressive communication
unintentionally and without conscious awareness. We’ll focus our examples on
three targeted groups – gender, race and LGBTQ. We will do so through the
use of story-telling, case studies, role play and play-based learning. The
goal is peace and thriving places of ministry through recognition of your
own use of subtle violence and the capacity to name that of others.

Chernobyl Anniversary: Film screening and discussion
Sun. April 30, 7 – 9 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther (St. George subway)
To commemorate the 31st Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe,
join us for a film screening of the 2012 documentary ‘The Atomic States of
America’. On April 26, 1986, a nuclear reactor in Pripyat, Ukraine suffered
a catastrophic power increase, leading to explosions in its core. This
dispersed large quantities of radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere and
caused an open-air fire. Thousand got cancer, mutations, Chernobyl heart,
and have died. After spending billions, it is still a disaster zone. To
honor the victims (and continue informing ourselves & others about nuclear
risks), we will screen the film 'Atomic States of America' and have a
discussion of current energy policy in Ontario. This excellent documentary
covers all aspects of the nuclear scene: economic, political, safety,
accidents, weapons, waste. Sponsored by Durham Nuclear Awareness (DNA),
Ontario Clean Air Alliance, and Peace and Social Action Committee.

May Day 2017
Monday May 1, 5 - 8 p.m.
Dufferin Grove Park, 875 Dufferin Street
May Day was born out of militant working class struggle. First declared by
the 2nd Internationale to commemorate the Haymarket Affair of May 1886, it
is celebrated around the world as International Workers Day—not just in the
centres of capital, but also in the peripheries (the so-called "Third
World") where the contradictions between the exploiting class and the
exploited are most often at their sharpest. As the crisis of capitalism
deepens, so increases the pressure, hardship, and violence upon the
exploited and oppressed. Once again we find ourselves facing a resurgence of
fascism. Let us gather this May 1st to affirm the unity of the international
working class.
