Electoral Reform and how to take Action
Mon. May 15, 7 - 9 p.m.
Friends House, 60 Lowther
Think it's time for Canada to finally have a voting system that's more fair and representative? One that doesn't allow a party to win 100% of the power with less than 40% of the vote? Justin Trudeau wants to break his promise on Election Reform. But we still have a chance to make him do the right thing, and keep that promise. On May 31st the report the Electoral Reform Committee created will be put to a vote. According to the rules of the house, if that vote passes, the report itself becomes an order which the government must carry out. If enough MPs, especially Liberal ones, start signing on, Justin Trudeau will either have to put electoral reform back on the table or face a revolt within his own party. With speakers:
- Marit Stiles, NDP president
- Ben Donato-Woodger, Electoral Reform Action Core
- Gerry Hobden, co-chair of Fair Vote Canada's Toronto action team
- Don Giberson, Council of Canadians Hamilton
PWYC ($5 suggested donation). Co-hosted by Reel Activism and the Council of Canadians (Toronto)

A New World From The Ashes Of The Old: Solidarity Economy Organizing In a Moment of Resistance
Wed. May 17, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Online - live webcast
The history of “New Economy” or “Solidarity Economy” organizing, building alternative economic institutions as part of a broader movement strategy, is at least as old as the left itself. Popular struggles ranging from earliest modern labor movements in Britain and the US, to the Indian independence movement, to the global Black Liberation movement, to Energiewende and other climate justice campaigns in Europe, have all demonstrated that “resistance” work, to be successful, must go hand in hand with concrete visionary organizing. This panel features leaders from across the country sharing how their communities have organized to simultaneously fight back far-right attacks and build powerful bottom-up solutions that model economic democracy, sustainability, and social justice as cornerstones of a new world in waiting.

Shopping For Change: Consumer Activism And The Possibilities Of Purchasing Power
Thur. May 18, 7 - 8:30 p.m.
Reference Library, 789 Yonge, Beeton Hall
Join Professor and co-editor of "Shopping for Change", Joseph Tohill, as he explores how past consumer activism in North America can inform and inspire consumer activisim in the age of Trudeau and Trump. Consuming with a conscience is a growing form of political participation worldwide. Ralph Nader said: Shopping for Change is replete with the documented beliefs that individual and collective political purchasing reduces and redirects the basic reservoir of giant corporate power the dollars we give them that they use against the people and the planet. Read this book and shop wisely, sometimes shop less, and, increasingly, shop together for your democratic voice.?

☢ Pickering Nuclear Station – tritium, high costs and risk Wed. May 24, 7 - 9 p.m.
Variety Village, 3701 Danforth Ave.
The Pickering Nuclear Station is one of the world’s oldest and largest, and it’s surrounded by 2 million people. OPG is now applying for yet another licence extension, this time till 2028. Meanwhile, it continues to release 100 kgs of tritiated water vapour daily – radioactive tritium is a carcinogen, mutagen and teratogen. And it continues to suck up $1 billion tax dollars every year to subsidize its operating losses. Are there other ways to meet our electricity needs that are lower cost and safer? With speakers:
- Jack Gibbons, Chair of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, will address the costs and alternatives to extending Pickering’s licence.
- Dr. Ian Fairlie, radiation specialist, will address Pickering’s tritium problem.
