T.O. Greenspiration Events: First Nations and Allies Unite for a Non-Nuclear ON

Angela Bischoff angela at cleanairalliance.org
Sun Nov 5 18:42:34 EST 2017

Friends, I'm co-organizing 2 important events this week that I'd like to invite you to. For a year I've been working with a coalition of Anishinabek and Iroquois Caucus First Nations and Bawating Water Protectors to understand the impact of nuclear power and waste on their lives. On Wed. 5-7 p.m. we're co-presenting on a panel at the U of T (https://www.facebook.com/events/126449761372635/) and on Thursday we're rallying at Queen's Park at noon. (https://www.facebook.com/events/1686438718054180/ )
Please join us to learn more, show solidarity, and express your rage at the province's plans to rebuild 10 aging nuclear reactors <http://www.cleanairalliance.org/ontario-doubles-down-on-obsolete-nuclear-and-youre-paying-for-it/> , locking us into nuclear power for another 5 decades at a time when the rest of the world is going renewable. Ontario too could choose to go renewable at much lower cost <http://www.cleanairalliance.org/tell-premier-wynne-you-support-a-money-saving-deal-with-quebec/> than rebuilding our aging nukes, and without the long-lasting dangers associated with nuclear power and waste for which we have no better solution than burying it on First Nations lands and hoping it doesn't leak anytime soon.
In solidarity,
=angela

How to Use the King Street Transit Pilot
The King Street Transit Pilot between Bathurst Street and Jarvis Street is about putting people and transit first by improving transit reliability, speed, and capacity. King Street is the busiest surface transit route in the city, moving more than 65,000 riders on an average weekday. The pilot is changing how King Street works, by not allowing through movement at most intersections for private vehicles and providing priority to streetcars. Local access for vehicles will be maintained on a block by block basis.

Imagine a Renewable Puerto Rico Designed by Puerto Ricans
By Naomi Klein and Elizabeth Yeampierre
Before Irma and Maria knocked out the vast majority of its electricity, Puerto Rico was getting 98 percent of its power from fossil fuels. A just transition would replace that extractive model with a system based on micro-grids of renewable energy generation, a decentralized network that would be more resilient in the face of inevitable weather shocks, while reducing the pollution making our climate go haywire in the first place.

Sponsor|Land - documentary about Syrian refugees
Wed. Nov. 8, 7 - 10 p.m.
Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles Street West
Canadians became international heroes during the Syrian refugee crisis when they stepped up, opened their doors, and sponsored thousands in need… but is there a catch? Abdel Malek and Sawsen have escaped a civil war with their eleven children to Picton, Ontario. They’ve gone from total strangers to instant family with a sponsorship group headed by Carlyn Moulton, a self-described “crazy lesbian art dealer” and her merry band of well-intentioned do-gooders. When happily ever after only happens in fairy tales, what do we have to sacrifice in order to fit in? What is owed to whom in the sponsorship transaction? And what exactly do we mean by “it takes a village”? SPONSORLAND follows the day to day lives of this Syrian refugee family, one of the first families brought to Canada in the fall of 2015 by Ryerson University LifeLine Syria Challenge and PEC Syria, a private sponsor group in Prince Edward County. $10

Nuclear Weapons & Christian Witness in an Anxious Age
A Lecture with The Rev’d Tyler Wigg-Stevenson
Wednesday, November 8
6 pm Service (Cathedral), 6:30 pm Light Supper (Cathedral Centre), 7 pm Lecture (Cathedral Centre)
St. James, 65 Church St. (at Adelaide)
Nuclear weapons, seemingly a bygone problem of the Cold War, have raged back into our daily headlines. From North Korea to Iran to the decay of U.S.-Russian relations, the threat of nuclear conflict feels more pressing than it has in decades. Fears are exacerbated by the heated rhetoric coming from the current White House, where President Trump holds the unilateral power to destroy life on earth with a single order. What’s a Christian to think, feel, and do in our anxious age? This talk will supply a brief primer on the history and current state of nuclear weapons (no prior knowledge needed) as well as an overview of Christian theological and political engagement with nuclear weapons, deterrence, and disarmament, and will conclude with possible steps for action and advocacy in the Canadian church context.

We Want a Renewable Ontario - First Nations and allies unite
Thur. Nov. 9, noon
Queen's Park (college and University)
Join us for this public assembly at Queen's Park:
- to call for the phase out rather than the rebuilding of Ontario’s nuclear stations;
- to protest the proposed burial and abandonment of nuclear waste on First Nations territories, potentially poisoning the waterways, soil and air forever with radioactive contamination;
- to protest the proposed abandonment of nuclear waste along major bodies of water in Chalk River and Kincardine;
- and to call for a 100% renewable future.
Renewables are do-able! We want wind, water and solar power – not rebuilt and extended nuclear stations which are expensive, dangerous, and produce deadly radioactive wastes that will remain hazardous for hundreds of thousands of years.

Jane
Nov. 10 through the month
Bloor Hot Docs, 506 Bloor (near Bathurst)
Live with Jane Goodall while she conducts her ground breaking, enthralling work with chimpanzees, which she revealed to be so like humans. Fifty years ago, a National Geographic filmmaker was sent to join her in the Tanzanian jungle, where he captured over 140 hours of 16mm footage that was never used. Today, Academy Award–nominated director Brett Morgen, whose skills of documentary portraiture range from musician Kurt Cobain (Cobain: Montage of Heck) to producer Robert Evans, takes the footage and sets it to a dreamy orchestral score by Philip Glass in this gorgeous, and ultimately very moving, time capsule. 2017
