In Trump's First Year, EPA Is Fining Polluters 49% Less

“President Trump’s dismantling of the EPA means violators are less likely to be caught, making illegal pollution cheaper,” said Eric Schaeffer, executive director of the Environmental Integrity Project and former director of EPA’s Office of Civil Enforcement. “The president’s ‘law and order’ agenda apparently wasn’t intended for fossil fuel companies and other big polluters.”

Tell Ontario to Cash It! Don’t Trash It! We need a deposit return program for plastic bottles.

Less than 50 per cent of the plastic bottles sold in Ontario get recycled. The rest – about 1.5 billion bottles – end up in landfills or littered in our environment. It’s time to turn the plastic tide. Deposit return programs are a proven way to boost recycling rates and reduce plastic litter. Now is the time for Ontario to get with the (deposit return) program, and keep billions of bottles from becoming trash. Tell the province to implement a deposit return program for plastic bottles.

PM Trudeau Electoral Reform Accountability Campaign

Democracy Watch has filed an official complaint with the Commissioner of Canada Elections alleging that Prime Minister Trudeau violated Canada’s election law during the 2015 federal election by trying to get voters to vote for Liberal candidates by baiting them with the false promise that “2015 election will be the last federal election using first-past-the-post” voting system. Please send the letter set out on this page calling on the Commissioner to investigate and prosecute Prime Minister Trudeau for his false promise.

The following day, the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee will be voting on the future of Yonge Street: to rebuild it either as a safe and vibrant street for people, or as a highway for cars. The choice is clear to us. Already nine people have lost their lives on Toronto streets so far this year.

Losing Community News Outlets - Democratic Implications

Mon. Feb. 26, 7:30 sharp

Madison Pub, 14 Madison Ave. (near Bloor and Spadina)

Small community papers are closing across the country. The demise of local news means that outside of major urban areas, people won’t know what’s happening in their own communities. What does this mean for a healthy democracy? What does it mean for society in general to have fewer sources of local information? Andrea Janus, a local reporter and editor, and Carmel Smyth, past president of the Canadian Media Guild, will be leading a discussion about the importance of local news and what communities can do.

Rally for Time to Care

Tuesday, February 27, 12 noon

Queen's Park (University and College)

Ontario's long-term care system is in crisis and is less funded than any other province in Canada. Bill 33, the Time to Care Act, calls for a minimum standard of 4 hours of daily, hands-on care for seniors in long-term care in Ontario. We had our MPPs to pass it at second reading, now we need to get it over the finish line. On Feb 27, rise up for seniors in long term care, who have waited far too long. Come to Queen's Park to send the Premier and all our MPPs a clear message: Make Time to Care the law in Ontario.

Fight For $15: The Challenges Ahead

Wed. Feb. 28, 7 – 9 pm

Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue

After nearly three years of organizing, protesting, striking, and lobbying, the Fight for $15 and Fairness secured a huge victory with the passage of Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, on November 22, 2017. Bill 148 implements the quickest timeline to a $15 minimum wage in North America. It also ushers in a host of other labour law reforms such as expanded emergency leave days, paid leave days, elimination of doctors’ notes, fair scheduling provisions, equal pay for equal work, and card-check and successor rights in certain sectors. However, these gains are not set in stone, and several employers and their right-wing sympathizers have already mounted an attack in order to reverse this major achievement. What are the shortfalls of Bill 148? How did the Fight for $15 and Fairness organize to win? Why is this movement significant for the Left? What is it doing to counter the employer offence? How is it preparing for the upcoming provincial election, and what is next for the movement?
