Occupation at Old City Hall
Soaring eagles camp in front of old city hall (Bay and Queen) is raising issues very important to our people regarding the deaths of Fontaine and Boushie, with no justice in sight. Not to mention thousands of others taken way before their time, processed in a racially biased system. There is a call out for more youth to come down, to work together, share ideas, have your voices heard and hold space. Bring hand warmers, feet warmers, hot chocolate, coffee, tea. Or traditional medicines. Or go to their site and ask what it is they need specifically. Support our youth.

☢ From Fukushima to Toronto
Monday, March 12, 7 – 8:30 pm
University of Toronto, Sydney Smith Hall, 100 Saint George, Room 2118
On March 11, 2011, the world’s largest industrial accident occurred – a triple nuclear meltdown – in Fukushima, Japan. An area up to 50 km was evacuated and 160,000 people displaced, most whom have yet to return. Plants and animals are genetically damaged. Hundreds of thousands of bags of radioactive soil are stranded around the countryside with no waste solution in site, and 300 tonnes of radioactive water flows into the Pacific Ocean daily, contaminating the food chain. The catastrophe is expected to cost the Japanese economy between $200 and $500 Billion. At this anniversary event, we will address a new report by Dr. Ian Fairlie, radiation biologist from the UK. His report considers what would happen if a serious nuclear accident, similar in extent to what took place in Fukushima, were to happen at the Pickering Nuclear Station just east of Toronto. The answer is alarming, exacerbated by the fact that Pickering is surrounded by millions of people. And we’ll discuss viable alternatives to nuclear power in ON, and how we can achieve a renewable future.

Join us on March 14 to continue to talk about how Great Lakes peoples can take action to shift water ownership into guardianship and uphold the human right to clean water.

One of us: Why Toronto's Poor Should Welcome Refugees
Thursday, March 15, 6 – 8 p.m.
CRC, 40 Oak Street (near Parliament and Gerrard)
Free event with a meal, childcare, wheelchair access and tokens
There is a pervasive sense that refugees and poor immigrants, particularly those without full immigration status, take resources away from the poor who were born in Canada. Many politicians exploit this sentiment to sow division among the poor for personal gain. Even those politicians who may not be overtly racist, still imply that their failure (and in reality, refusal) to address poverty and homelessness is a result of a "refugee influx." Do these claims are any merit? Has the rise in refugees seeking asylum triggered the shelter crisis in Toronto? Does government support for refugees mean less support for poor citizens? Join us for a meal at 6pm, and stay for the discussion.
