Tell Canada to support Bill M-151 that will tackle the national plastics crisis

The important Bill M-151, introduced by NDP MP Gord Johns, would introduce a national strategy to reduce plastic products entering the oceans such as bags, bottles, and straws, to clean up shores and to educate the public about plastic pollution. This strategy would force corporations that have relied on cheap, disposable plastics to clean up their act and would be a huge step forward in protecting marine animals that are devastated at the hands of plastic pollution.

Hydro 1's CEO earns $6 million/yr!

Last year the average CEO in the US made 271 times the wages of the average worker. In the '50's, the difference was 20 times. In Mondragon, the difference is set at 5 times. The Toronto-based Wagemark Foundation calls for a difference of 8 to 1. That seems reasonable to me.

The movement has been successful in exposing the pervasiveness of this violence in our society, and has been rapidly endorsed by celebrities and politicians. But does #MeToo address the concerns of poor women? Is its scope limited to exposing the harassment and violence perpetrated by famous men, or to the violence experienced by rich women? How does the movement respond to systemic violence against Indigenous and racialized women? What does the history of movements fighting violence against women teach us about similar struggles today? Earth Day Presentation on Nuclear vs. Renewables - with Angela Bischoff, OCAA

With a provincial election in June, electricity will be front and centre. Ontario gets 60% of our electricity from 18 aging nuclear reactors. The government plans to extend the life of the geriatric Pickering Nuclear station, and rebuild the Darlington and Bruce nuclear stations, locking us into high cost nuclear power for 5 more decades while the rest of the world moves to a renewable future. What are our options for electricity generation in Ontario, and where do the political parties stand on this critical issue?  In our back yard, the Pickering Nuclear Station is one of the oldest and largest nuclear stations in the world and sits in the middle of the GTA. Originally designed to operate for 30 years, it is now 47, and gov’t plans are to run it yet another 6 years. Fortunately, we could instead decommission it (create jobs!) and replace it with much lower cost and safer renewable water power from Quebec (lower bills!).
