The World

☢ Trump's EPA Moves to Roll Back Radiation Safety Rules For decades, the government has advised that any exposure to harmful radiation carries cancer risks for humans.

☢ Proposed rule change worries some about radiation regulation The EPA is pursuing rule changes that experts say would weaken the way radiation exposure is regulated, turning to scientific outliers who argue that a bit of radiation damage is actually good for you—like a little bit of sunlight. More here. But radiation harms us and no dose is safe.

☢ Gender and Radiation Impact Project In the atomic age, gender matters: For every two men who develop cancer through exposure to ionizing radiation, three women will get the disease. Further, while children as a whole are more harmed by radiation than adults, infant and young girls, when exposed, run the highest risk of cancer across their lifetime, and teenage girls will suffer almost double rates of cancer compared to boys in the same juvenile group and the same level of exposure.

☢ Ottawa intends to hatch a new generation of nuclear power reactors called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) A backgrounder by Dr. Gordon Edwards. The ever-hopeful nuclear industry and the oh-so-gullible Canadian government have colluded together to pool their ignorance—the government, by not taking the trouble to develop a policy for the long-term management of nuclear wastes that would make such quick-and-dirty schemes unacceptable, and the industry, by ploughing ahead with a new generation of waste-producing nuclear reactors without ever having demonstrated a satisfactory method for dealing with the waste we already have over the very long term.

☢ Radioactive Waste and Canada's First Nations Radioactivity causes cancer and damages unborn children. Radioactive wastes remain dangerous for thousands of years. Radioactive poisons contaminate air, soil, food and water. Radioactive wastes are trucked through indigenous territories. Radioactive wastes are dumped on or near indigenous lands. Indigenous people have not given free prior informed consent. Indigenous communities have not been adequately consulted. 1 hour video.

☢ SNC-Lavalin shares fall to lowest since 2016 on news foreign bribery case will go to court The RCMP alleges that between 2001 and 2012, the company paid almost $48 million in bribes and defrauded various other entities of almost $130 million. SNC is a major player in Ontario’s nuclear industry. More here.

☢ Trump administration kills contract for plutonium-to-fuel plant The Trump administration just killed a contract for a project to convert plutonium from Cold War-era bombs into power, which it said would cost tens of billions of dollars. MOX opponents praised the closure.

☢ The World Nuclear Industry Status Report tracks the rise and fall of the electricity sector. It shows that the curtain is falling on nuclear power while renewable energy is soaring.

☢ Melting glaciers at Novaya Zemlya contain radiation from nuclear bomb tests A science expedition to the area discovered “big concentrations of radioactivity” in the ice – concluding that the glaciers are melting into the sea at record speed.Ontario

☢ How we can make every Pickering nuclear worker a millionaire and save Ontario electricity consumers $5 billion Ontario can lower its electricity costs by $1.1 to $1.4 Billion per year by simply closing the Pickering Nuclear Station. The cost of Quebec water power is approx. 50-75% lower than Pickering’s operating costs.

☢ Hornepayne, Ont., municipal election to become debate on nuclear waste Two Council candidates hope a victory at the ballot box will mean they can change the current direction of how council feels about hosting nuclear waste.

☢ Mike Schreiner, Green Party of Ontario, Shares His Thoughts On Energy Policy in Ontario “It’s simply foolish for ON to continue pouring money down the nuclear drain, proposing gas tax cuts, and canceling energy efficiency programs. The Premier is declaring war on the modern world and it’s bad for business, job creation, and our environment.”Renewables and Conservation

☼ ‘Rapid, far-reaching change’: IPCC recommends up to 97% of power from renewables by 2050 to limit climate change – up from 28% in 2020.

☼ The Wind Is Blowing Wind power is bringing clean energy, prosperity, and good jobs to the U.S.

☼ UK opens first wind turbine recycling centre This comes as a number of European wind farms are approaching the end of their expected 25-year lifetimes.Take Action! ☢ Sign our petitions to Close Pickering and to Buy Quebec Power. And share them with your friends. Watch our 2 min. video here.
