Canada warming at twice the global rate, climate report finds

The report, released late on Monday by Environment and Climate Change Canada, paints a grim picture of Canada’s future, in which deadly heatwaves and heavy rainstorms become a common occurrence. Forty-three government scientists and academics authored the peer-reviewed report. While global temperatures have increased 0.8C since 1948, Canada has seen an increase of 1.7C – more than double the global average.

What’s the Difference Between a Low-Carbon and Zero-Carbon Future? Survival

Governments, media and industry use ‘low-carbon economy’ frame to continue business as usual, meaning there's still a role for fracking, liquefied natural gas and nuclear. But a zero-carbon economy is what we want and need - fuelled entirely by renewable, non-carbon-emitting sources.

Tell Ford to Restore Funding for Overdose Prevention in Toronto

Doug Ford and his Health Minister Christine Elliott have defunded two supervised consumption sites in Toronto, and left a third site with their funding in limbo. Without funding, these life-saving services could be forced to close their doors during the defining public health crisis of our time. 600 people died from an overdose in Ontario in just 6 months last year, and overdose is now one of the leading causes of death of young people in Ontario. Please sign the petition.

https://www.progresstoronto.ca/take-action-to-save-lives

Tell Ford: Don’t Cut Our Health Care

According to news reports, Doug Ford is planning hundreds of millions in cuts to MRIs, critical tests, pain management and health services you and your family rely on.

https://north99.org/tell-ford-hands-off-our-health-care/

Don’t Steal Our Subway

Premier Doug Ford's plan to steal the subway will delay the transit we need. The province's plan will mean less say for residents, and opens the door to privatization, higher subway fares, and worse service. Tell Premier Ford to fund the TTC, not steal it!

http://www.ttcriders.ca/oursubway/

Tell Ford you want low-cost water power from Quebec to replace our high-cost nuclear rebuilds

QC has massive surplus renewable water power, and we’ve got the grid. They’re offering it to us at one third the cost of rebuilding Darlington. Please sign our petition:

And if you can help me leaflet blitz mailboxes in Doug Ford's riding (or your own hood) let me know. angela at cleanairalliance.org

Road to Zero Waste

Tues. April 9, 6:30 p.m.

Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre, 1499 Queen Street West

There is a worldwide epidemic of food wastage, and Canada is no exception. Every year, Canadian food waste amounts to $31 billion dollars. Not only are important resources being squandered as a result of this waste, but also it is environmentally damaging to our planet. When wasted food is thrown into landfill and begins to decompose, methane gas is released into the atmosphere, contributing directly to global warming.  Road to Zero Waste is a local non-profit organization that works to address these problems by running workshops about food waste in various neighbourhoods and community spaces. Our goal is to change the way Canadians think about food waste, and to reduce food waste in Canada more quickly and efficiently. At this two-part workshop, our team of educators will teach you about the reasons for the ongoing food waste epidemic, and offer some tips that will help your household reduce food waste.

Equal Pay Day Blitz

Tues. April 9, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

400 University Avenue, outside the Ministry of Labour

In Ontario the gender pay gap is a human rights crisis. Equal Pay Day marks how far into the new year the average woman must work to earn what men earned by the end of last year. With the average gender pay gap at 29.3%, it means women must work 3.5 months longer to equal what a man makes in a year.  On average, women must work 15.5 months to earn what a man earns in 12 months. This year the Equal Pay Coalition is calling on Labour Minister Laurie Scott to take action to close the gender pay gap.

Understanding the constitutionality of federal jurisdiction in carbon pricing - Webinar

Thur. Apr 11, 3 - 4:30 p.m.

Last summer, the newly elected Ontario government of Doug Ford abolished the province's cap-and-trade legislation and vowed to fight the imposition of federal carbon pricing. On January 1, 2019, in the absence of an equivalent provincial pricing scheme, a federal carbon tax came into effect in Ontario. The provincial government has filed a reference with the Court of Appeal challenging the federal government’s carbon tax legislation as unconstitutional, and several CAN-Rac members have successfully applied for intervenor status in the upcoming court case. That case goes to court the week of April 15 in Ontario. In this webinar, we will hear from the legal teams working with some of those intervenors - David Suzuki Foundation, Équiterre, and Environmental Defence Canada. They will break down arguments to be presented in favour of upholding the federal government's jurisdiction to apply carbon pricing in provinces.

Take Metro Hall: Shelter & Housing Now

Fri. April 12, 1- 2:30 p.m.

Metro Hall, 55 John St.

Homelessness demands action, yet the City refuses to take any. In the midst of a deadly housing crisis, they're shutting down respite sites without opening sufficient replacements. By late spring, between 200 to 300 respite spaces will be lost. The City is banking on homeless people going back to sleeping in ravines, parks, and on the streets as the weather warms. Toronto needs adequate shelters and rent-geared-to-income housing. Mayor Tory's plans build neither. If they won't take action, we must. Join us at Metro Hall to demand that the City:

- Not close respite spaces without sufficient replacements being opened first.

- Add 2000 new shelter beds to address the shortage.

- Expropriate 214-230 Sherbourne St. - a series of 7 properties vacant for 10 years - and build rent-geared-to-income housing.

- Stop the private developer take-over of the 11 city-owned properties and build social housing instead.

The delegation will include doctors, an educator (who is also a city council member), a high school student and two labour activists. At this occupational disease summit, we will have reports from each of the main clusters - Sarnia, Peterborough, construction workers, Sault Ste Marie, Elliot Lake, Sudbury and the northern Ontario miners forced to breathe aluminum powder before every shift.
