The Growing Threat of PFAS – the Forever Chemicals

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals widely used for over fifty years due to their ability to resist grease, water, and oil. They are highly persistent in the environment, have known health impacts and are now widely present in the blood of all Canadians tested.  PFAS is used in household products such as carpets, furniture, waterproof clothing and food packaging as well as firefighting foam to deal with fuel-based fires.  Because they are highly mobile and persistent in water, PFAS are recognized as a widespread drinking water contaminant.  According to experts, in the Great Lakes Basin, "the highest levels of PFAS are generally found in areas of Lake Ontario, the western end of Lake Erie and the Detroit River corridor" with Toronto having the highest concentrations of certain PFAS in air.  But Canadians have very low awareness of PFAS use and contaminated sites and little understanding of how the Canadian government is responding. The Canadian Environmental Law Association, Toxics Free Great Lakes Network, and Healthy Great Lakes Program is sponsoring this webinar to present an overview of PFAS use, the growing threat to the Great Lakes-St Lawrence River Ecosystem and a discussion of how communities can take action.

Chew on This! is a non-partisan cross-country campaign coordinated by Dignity for All, but made possible through local organizers from coast to coast to coast. Our goal is to raise awareness about poverty in Canada by engaging with people on the street, in schools, at places of worship, and on Parliament Hill and adding their voices to our call for federal leadership in ending poverty in Canada.

Toxic Tour of Chemical Valley

The Toxic Tour is an opportunity to see and experience first-hand the pollution that Aamjiwnaang First Nation community members experience every day. Aamjiwnaang First Nation is located in the middle of Sarnia’s Chemical Valley, the most polluted place in North America, according to National Geographic. The reserve is encircled by over 73 high-emitting facilities such as petrochemical refineries and various factories. The toxic operations and regular chemical releases are poisoning people in the community which faces high rates of asthma, cancer, miscarriages, stillbirths, and endocrine disruptions. The fact that an Indigenous community is being sacrificed for corporate profit and nothing is being done to protect community members is a clear sign of Environmental Racism. We can do our part by learning about this situation and supporting the grassroots groups raising awareness and trying to stop further contamination of the community’s people and territory.
