☢ Understanding the landscape of nuclear challenges for Canada: Is the Dragon Sleeping in the House? 1-day conference. Sat. Nov. 2 in Markham, Ontario. I'll be speaking about Canada's dead-end nuclear plans and alternatives. Other speakers will address radiation in the Great Lakes, dangers of the nuclear arms race, and radiation and public health. Register today. (Subsidies available.)
The World
☢ The 7 reasons why nuclear energy is not the answer to solve climate change by Mark Z. Jacobson. New nuclear power costs about 5 times more than onshore wind power per kWh. Nuclear takes 5 to 17 years longer between planning and operation and produces on average 23 times the emissions per unit of electricity generated. In addition, it creates risk and cost associated with weapons proliferation, meltdown, mining lung cancer, and waste. Clean renewables avoid all such risks.

☢ Unreported Deaths, Child Cancer & Radioactive Meat: The Untold Story of Chernobyl Kate Brown’s new book, “Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future,” chronicles the devastating and underreported impact of radiation on tens of thousands in the Soviet Union that went unreported for decades. Incredible 15 min. video interview with her on Democracy Now.

☢ Majority of federal candidates surveyed oppose radioactive waste mound at Chalk River The NDP, Green Party and People’s Party of Canada candidates who replied were virtually unanimous in opposing the construction of a permanent aboveground radioactive waste mound at Chalk River, Ontario by the federal government through its multi-billion-dollar contract with SNC-Lavalin and two American corporations. No responses were received from Liberal or Conservative candidates.

☢ The Trump Nuclear Push Kevin Kamps of Beyond Nuclear discusses how the Trump administration is spearheading an international push for nuclear power. Excellent 28 min. video interview.

☢ Typhoon re-releases radioactive contamination from Fukushima Typhoon Hagibis has revealed how incompatible nuclear is with nature; how untenable managing the radioactive remnants of nuclear technology can be; and how nuclear catastrophes leave a continuing legacy of contamination, insecurity and threat. More here.

Ontario
☢ Ford’s bill changes won’t save you a dime The Ford government thinks playing with your hydro bill layout – by breaking out the large provincial subsidy introduced by the Wynne government – will make you feel better about electricity costs. But what they’re not transparent about is their failure to deliver on their promise to cut electricity bills by 12% – on the contrary, rates have actually increased thanks to nuclear rebuilds and extensions.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ Renewable energy to expand by 50% in next five years Global supplies of renewable electricity are growing faster than expected, powered by a resurgence in solar energy.

☼ Renewables use only fraction of minerals used for fossil fuel generation Nevertheless, this footprint will increase as the renewable electricity sector continues to grow, driven primarily by growth in solar PV and wind, and will need to be monitored in terms of sustainability.

☼ Alberta Looks to Renewables Boom as Corporate Procurement Gains Momentum

Take Action
☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to Cut the Cuts and invest in water power from Quebec rather than rebuilding 10 nuclear reactors. If you can spare a few hours to leaflet your neighbourhood mailboxes, let me know. (angela at cleanairalliance.org)

☢ Please sign our petitions to CutTheCuts and move to 100%RenewableOntario and share them with your friends.

☢ Stop OPG's Nuclear Waste Dump Before It's Too Late Learn more about OPG’s nuke waste dump proposal in Kincardine, ON, and write Minister McKenna, Premier Ford and PM Trudeau here.

☢ Order your free KI (anti-thyroid-cancer) pills here if you live within 50 km of an ON nuclear facility - that includes all of Toronto and beyond. Download your anti-thyroid cancer posters here to post in your office, school, or local cafe.

☢ Our Future with a Green New Deal Webinar Tues. Oct. 29, 8 p.m. EDT Help win a Green New Deal by turning your community into a Green New Deal Community. Together, we can build a Green New Deal from the ground up. Hosted by Council of Canadians.
