Record GHG Concentrations Prompt Call for Drastic Action to Reduce Emissions

A 3.2°C increase “would make [the number of migrants] we’re seeing coming out of Latin America now into Mexico and into the U.S. look like nothing, There’s just going to be people suffering in places where it will become literally uninhabitable, where they won’t be able to grow food anymore, where their animals won’t be able to live anymore. That’s what I worry about the most, the conflict and the misery that’s going to happen around the world. That’s what keeps me up at night.”

OK Doomer - ‘Yes it’s possible!’

We really don’t benefit from unrealistic dooming and glooming. We need a far more determined, positive framing, celebrating the transition to a new ecological civilization in which we finally learn how to live in harmony with Nature, and with each other.

Alberta the World’s Biggest Per Capita Carbon Polluter

Alberta has the highest per capita emissions in the world, three times higher than Saudi Arabia, currently the worst colossal fossil among the world’s nations. “You might think that Alberta is such a threat because of the massive expansions in the oil and gas industry, particularly the oilsands. But it turns out that governments and industry have built an economy so dirty that it makes each Albertan almost twice as polluting as Saudis, even if you ignore emissions from Alberta’s oil and gas sector entirely.”

Fast for the Climate

Fasting for the Climate has proven an empowering action for people of faith and fellow travellers around the globe. And it has called upon everyone to take personal responsibility for their consumption - heads of state, leaders and ordinary folks. We all have common but differentiated responsibilities and varying capacities to contribute for climate justice. Why not join in? As people gather in Madrid on the Eve of COP25, Fast For The Climate is calling for a Fast on December 1. It can be personal, individual or collective, private or public. A voluntary fast from food and/or carbon in any form or expression decided upon. Anywhere. Any time. The rapist is you: A powerful feminist protest performance on the streets of Chile

Powerful feminist street politics taking place around the globe. "The rapist is you" (with english captions) shows the original video recorded just last week in Chile. The chant/dance compares state repression and violation of citizens’ rights to the actions of a rapist. https://scroll.in/video/945174/the-rapist-is-you-a-powerful-feminist-protest-performance-on-the-streets-of-chile

In the past week the same chant/dance has been performed by women around the world. You can watch the many versions happening around the world here.

Google - respect workers' rights

We call on Google to respect workers’ fundamental freedoms of association and assembly, and their right to organize without fear of retaliation. Petition.

In Toronto, Google’s sister company, Sidewalk Labs, hopes to build a smart city test bed on public waterfront land with the aid of public money, giving the company the opportunity to dominate yet another tech market. With Google’s troubling record on workers’ rights – its reliance on precarious forms of work, poor handling of sexual harassment claims and now open union-busting – we question whether this company is the right partner for Toronto’s public sector.

Mayor Tory: Declare Homelessness an Emergency

This past month there have been eight reported homeless deaths in the City of Toronto. The City has failed to shelter the most vulnerable. All seven Respite Centres are full, the two 24-hour women’s drop-ins and the Out of the Cold program are over capacity on many nights. The Assessment and Referral Centre on Peter Street is unable to operate as a referral centre as there are insufficient beds in the system. In order to prevent more deaths and suffering, we request that you enact the City of Toronto Emergency Plan immediately.

Climate Justice Toronto Organizing Meeting

Mon. Dec 2, 6 - 8:30 p.m.

Dalla Lana School of Public Health, 155 College St

We have less than 11 years, according to the IPCC report, to completely transform our economy and society to avert further climate catastrophe. Yet Canadian governments refuse to take meaningful systemic action, and instead opt to spend billions in public money to fund more pipelines while doling out billions more for dead-end corporate welfare subsidies. Meanwhile, those at the frontlines of the climate crisis, namely Indigenous, racialized, and poor communities, are being neglected by decision-makers.

Climate Justice Toronto (CJTO) is organizing to unite young people from all movement backgrounds in the GTA to send a message to our governments and the broader public: the only people who will be making decisions about our future is us, the people affected, and especially the most marginalized among us. Through solidarity and alliance-building, direct action, creative storytelling, and electoral organizing, we will forge a just transition towards a decarbonized economy, and a Green New Deal for all.

Every month this year, the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) will be holding a peace vigil outside the NATO Association of Canada headquarters. NATO puts intense pressure on the Canadian government to increase military spending and is preventing Canada from joining the UN Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons. VOW is calling for the Canadian government to withdraw from NATO and work through the United Nations on disarmament and the Sustainable Development Goals that will bring genuine human security. No to NATO; yes to peace, nonviolence and sustainability! Join us for lunch after the rally.

Freeland: No Coup in Bolivia! Stop the sanctions against Venezuela! End the arms sales to Saudi Arabia!

Tues. Dec. 3, 3 - 4 p.m.

The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) will be delivering a letter and holding a rally outside the office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland to object to her/the federal government's interference and sanctions against Venezuela and to the continuing arms sales to Saudi Arabia that is exacerbating the war in Yemen – the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Canada, the Lima Group and the US are orchestrating a coup against Venezuela. The sanctions and interference against the country are blatant violations of international law. We are also opposed to Canada’s participation in the Lima Group and call for a peaceful, negotiated solution & the lifting of sanctions to end the crisis in Venezuela. Please bring flags and banners for Venezuela. An action by the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW). #HandsOffVenezuela #CancelArmsSalestoSaudiArabia #ExportPeace

The Condor and the Eagle - Toronto Premier

Tues. Dec. 3, 7 - 9:30 p.m.

Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Avenue, U of T

Award-winning climate crisis documentary. While the Amazon burns, the global youth climate movement gains momentum and the United Nations warns we have one decade to reduce emissions by half to avoid irreversible, catastrophic effects of the climate emergency, The Condor & the Eagle shows how we can follow Indigenous leadership to shift from fossil fuel extraction to a sustainable future. Four Indigenous leaders embark on a trans-continental adventure - from the Canadian plains to deep into the heart of the Amazonian jungle to unite the peoples of North and South America and deepen the meaning of "Climate Justice." The movie features stories of the resilience and resistance of modern Indigenous people in the face of extractive industry. After the movie we will also have a panel. Tickets are $10 online, $12 at the door. Brought to you by ClimateFast, the David Suzuki Foundation, FridaysForFuture and Greenpeace Canada.

Teach-in: The Violence of Canada's Border Enforcement

Sun. Dec. 8, 6 - 9 p.m.

Friends House, 60 Lowther

Right-wing extremism, fascism, hatred, and xenophobia are on the rise in our communities. Compounding this violence, the Canadian government is increasing the number deportations of migrants, expanding the Safe Third Country Agreement, and building more immigration prisons coast to coast. Who patrols our streets, picking up our community members? Who locks down the borders for anyone who isn't rich and/or white? The answer is the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). The CBSA are Canada's ICE, and this is their job: to police, jail, terrorize, and deport migrants. Join No One Is Illegal-Toronto for a community dinner and teach-in about the CBSA, the Canadian deportation regime, and the changing face of immigration detention.
