The World
☢ Small Modular Nuclear Reactors, a case of wishful thinking at best While our three premiers revisit these bygone reactor designs in order to obtain funding from the federal government, they avoid more sensible strategies for combatting climate change – cheaper, faster and safer alternatives based on energy efficiency and renewable sources.

☢ Small nuclear reactors are no solution to climate change Climate change is upon us. We need real, immediate solutions, not lowbrow distractions.

☢ Nuclear Energy is Dirty Energy and does not fit into a “clean energy standard” To call nuclear power “clean” is an affront to science and common sense. A primer by NIRS (Nuclear Information and Resource Service).

☢ Greenpeace condemns Japanese government panel’s draft proposal to discharge radioactive water A Japanese gov’t subcommittee is proposing to discharge Fukushima's radioactive water directly into the ocean and release the vapour into the lower atmosphere. While this is the lowest cost option, it has the highest threat to the environment.

☢ SNC-Lavalin pleads guilty to fraud Company involved with rebuilding Ontario’s Darlington Nuclear Station and managing ON’s nuclear waste will pay a $280M penalty over 5 years and be placed on probation for bribery and laundering millions to win SNC-Lavalin contracts in Libya.

☢ The strange tale of the bird ladies of Sellafield Pigeons that roosted on the Sellafield Nuclear facility became radioactive, and then contaminated the ‘bird ladies’ garden which was then removed as radioactive waste.

☢ Nuclear colonialism Indigenous opposition grows in New Mexico against proposal for nation’s largest nuclear storage facility.

Ontario
☢ Hydro power, not nuclear, is best for Ontario Instead of banking on phantom solutions like non-existent “small modular reactors” that, if they are ever built, will have all the waste, cost and security problems of conventional nuclear plants, Ontario should make a money-saving deal with Quebec.

☢ Ontario can phase out nuclear and avoid increased carbon emissions Simply put, nuclear power isn’t needed to meet Ontario’s electricity needs. The costs of renewable energy, including solar photovoltaics, is declining rapidly.

☢ Why Ontario must rethink its nuclear refurbishment plans Investing in old energy generation facilities moves us away from a lower cost, renewable energy transition and locks consumers into high electricity costs for decades.

☢ Burning more gas is not what our climate needs Enbridge Gas wants to build a pipeline through one of Hamilton’s most important natural areas in order to feed a huge increase in the use of Ontario’s gas-fired power plants and to supply the U.S. Northeast with fracked gas, setting the stage for a 400-600% increase in GHGs.

Renewables and Conservation

☼ Ontario’s Environment Minister is playing batty politics with wind-turbine decision If the minister were truly concerned about reducing bat fatalities, we could have achieved this in numerous ways that would have also allowed the turbines to generate carbon-free energy.

☼ Wind farm owner launches court challenge against Ontario government If they were serious about protecting bats they wouldn’t have gutted the Endangered Species Act. More here.

☼ 100% Wind, Water, & Solar Energy Can & Should Be The Goal and Costs Less Mark Jacobson and his team have come up with a roadmap for 143 countries showing how they can go 80% renewable by 2030, and 100% renewable by 2050. While it’ll cost $73 trillion, it’ll save $800 trillion by 2030 in avoidable costs and earn trillions every year. It will also create twice as many jobs as will be lost. More here.

Take Action and Events

☢ Stop the giant Hamilton gas pipeline - sign the petition Say no to the proposed Hamilton Pipeline and fracked gas imports from the U.S.

☢ Sign the petition to Stop BWXT’s Licence Renewal: Shut Down the Uranium Processing Plant in central Toronto (Dupont and Lansdowne).

☢ Community Meeting to Stop BWXT's uranium plant license renewal Tues. Jan. 21, 7 p.m. Davenport Perth Community Centre, 1900 Davenport, Toronto. Come learn about the BWXT Uranium Plant at Dupont and Lansdowne which causes a radiation threat to all of us.

☢ Sign our petition calling for immediate dismantling of the Pickering Nuclear Station after it closes in 2024.

☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to Cut the Cuts and invest in water power from Quebec rather than rebuilding 10 nuclear reactors. If you can spare a few hours to leaflet your neighbourhood mailboxes, let me know. (angela at cleanairalliance.org)

☢ Please sign our petitions to CutTheCuts and move to 100%RenewableOntario and share them with your friends.

☢ Order your free KI (anti-thyroid-cancer) pills here if you live within 50 km of an ON nuclear facility - that includes all of Toronto and beyond. Download your anti-thyroid cancer posters here to post in your office, school, or local cafe.
