A nuclear facility does not belong in a residential neighbourhood. The End the Radiation on Lansdowne campaign represents a swelling of Toronto communities working to shut down the Lansdowne nuclear facility out of concern for community health and safety. The uranium plant at 1025 Lansdowne Avenue (corner of Dupont and Lansdowne) processes approximately half of all the uranium used in Canada’s nuclear reactors.

L’Arche International announces findings of Independent Inquiry

In response to accusations of sexual abuse by the esteemed Jean Vanier, co-founder of the L'Arche community, L'Arche International commissioned an independent inquiry and released the results here. I believe this to be an honorable and appropriate response, a great example of how institutions should deal with accusations of this sort.

This is a special 2-part event collaboration between U of T student and community groups, all youth and Black led, to bring the conversation about urban agriculture, food justice, gender equity, and race to the forefront. We will begin with an open conversation about food apartheid and food justice led by Cheyenne Sundance from Sundance Harvest, followed by a Q&A session prepared and led by 1919. Part two will feature a volunteer based practical experience and educational exercise at the Sundance Harvest Greenhouse.

Experts from across North America will form an Advisory Panel and visit Toronto during the week of February 24 to learn about Toronto's challenges, meet with leaders on this topic, and make recommendations. These recommendations will be shared publicly at this forum. The Advisory Panel will focus on solutions that encourage broad investment in the improving private apartment towers while maintaining rents at affordable levels for residents. Free.

Rally to Shut Down the Lansdowne Nuclear Facility in Toronto

The End the Radiation on Lansdowne campaign represents a swelling of Toronto communities working to shut down the Lansdowne nuclear facility out of concern for community health and safety. Largely unbeknownst to the surrounding west end Toronto communities, the BWXT Inc. nuclear facility (situated at the corner of Lansdowne and Dupont) has quietly applied for a ten-year operating license renewal. Together, we voice our strong opposition prior to and for the upcoming public hearings on March 2-3, 2020 held by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Together, we will shut down the BWXT Inc. Toronto uranium plant. Together, we will end the #radiationonlansdowne.

OPG & Enbridge vs. Our Climate and Our Pocketbooks

Enbridge Gas wants to build a giant pipeline through Hamilton to allow Ontario to increase imports of fracked gas from the US. According to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), the greenhouse gas pollution from Ontario’s gas plants will increase by 8.2 mega tonnes by 2025. This is double the forecast annual greenhouse gas pollution from Teck’s proposed Frontier tar sands mine. This will mean a 400% increase in greenhouse gases from OPG's gas-fired generating plants and blow our climate commitments out of the water. We can prevent this from happening by investing in energy efficiency, buying Quebec power and phasing-out our gas plants by 2030. Learn more here with the Ontario Clean Air Alliance.
