The World
☢ The next threat: A high-level nuclear waste dump near Lake Huron NWMO selects site for high level nuke waste dump near scrapped Ontario DGR

☢ Radioactive waste: a big problem for New Brunswick’s proposed new nuclear reactors The recent letter from more than 100 groups across Canada, the cancellation last week of the proposed nuclear waste dump in Ontario, and the formation in May of a new coalition in New Brunswick to oppose the new nuclear projects demonstrate that significant opposition to new nuclear energy generation exists. Read more background from Dr. Gordon Edwards here.

☢ New nuclear waste guidelines could lead to ‘massive dump’ upstream from Ottawa if approved New nuclear waste guidelines could clear the way for a much-debated, large, above-ground nuke waste disposal mound to be built at Chalk River, the national nuclear research facility 180 km NW of Ottawa.

☢ Nuclear waste disposal plan in Manitoba fuels frustration "CNSC’s conduct in this matter is disrespectful, colonial and inexcusable." - Sagkeeng First Nation

☢ Uranium Atlas - Facts and Data about the Raw Material of the Atomic Age The Uranium Atlas maps out the pathway of uranium and the harm it has caused — predominantly to Indigenous peoples at the beginning and end of the uranium story, and to people of color and minorities, during its use for nuclear power plants and atomic bombs.

☢ Small Modular Reactors: History and Future Potential 30 min. podcast with Dr. M.V. Ramana, University of B.C.

☢ Ohio Politician arrested for $61 M public corruption racketeering conspiracy related to Ohio's 2019 $1.5 B nuclear & coal bailout House Bill Around 90% of the Ohio ratepayer-funded bailout went to two age-degraded atomic reactors on northern Ohio's Lake Erie shoreline. Watch Kevin Kamps expose this multi-billion dollar nuclear scandal (6-min. video)

☢ Canada should acknowledge its role in the Atomic bomb Setsuko Thurlow, a Canadian resident and Hiroshima survivor, is asking PM Trudeau to issue a statement of regret for Canada's role in the atrocities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty. In her own words here.

Ontario
☢ Ford government must phase out natural gas power plants, 29 groups say The coalition’s call to action asks Premier Doug Ford to reverse cuts to energy efficiency programs, put more funding towards developing low-cost renewable resources, and accept an offer of cheap hydroelectricity from Quebec.

☢ Green Party endorses gas plant phase out and calls on other opposition parties to follow its lead More from the GPO here.

☢ Windsor environmentalists sounding alarm over provincial plan to fire up gas plants The Ford government will reverse years of progress cleaning up Ontario’s electricity sector if a plan to fire up gas plants goes forward. An alliance of 29 groups proposes more “responsible electricity supply options” for Ontario including wind, solar, conservation and water power from Quebec.

☢ No Gas Plants Please, We’re Canadian! Fossil fuels are the cause of rising emissions in Canada and globally. And natural gas is a fossil fuel. Ontario gas plants are big emitters, and rising.

Renewables and Conservation
☼ Building Back Better with a Bold Green Recovery The areas for investment for the Building Back Better Canada Plan include the following programs:
• deep retrofits of homes and workplaces
• accelerated electric vehicle (EV) uptake
• support for active mobility (e.g. walking and biking)
• greening of the electricity grid
• decarbonizing of heavy industry
• nature-based climate solutions for our forests and farmland, and
• making Canada a leading supplier of EV components and zero-carbon natural resources.

☼ Plummeting Wind Costs Could Make ‘Green’ Hydrogen Cost-Competitive by 2023

☼ Biden’s climate change plan would challenge Canada While a Biden win would represent major victory in the battle against climate change, it would pose both an opportunity and a challenge to Canada’s growing clean technology sector.

Take Action
☢ Send a message to Ontario NDP and Liberal Party leaders calling for climate leadership by endorsing the gas plant phase out.

☢ Phase out Ontario's gas-fired power plants by 2030 Call your MPP and leaders of our four main political parties and tell them it's time to demonstrate climate leadership by phasing out gas-fired power by 2030. Our action tool makes it easy to make the calls.

☢ Sign the petition to phase-out Ontario's gas plants Rather than ramp up GHGs from Ontario's gas plants by 400%, we can power our grid with conservation, water power from QC and made-in-ON green energy at lower cost, lower risk and lower emission. Send a letter to ON's Premier and Party Leaders here.

☢ Stop the giant Hamilton gas pipeline - sign the petition Say no to the proposed Hamilton Pipeline and fracked gas imports from the U.S.

☢ Order your FREE leaflets here calling on the Ford Government to phase out gas plants and immediately dismantle Pickering Nuclear Station after shutdown in 2024. We're coordinating distribution blitzes in Toronto, Pickering and Hamilton. High school students can gain volunteer service hours. Contact angela at cleanairalliance.org for more info.
