Carbon emissions of richest 1% more than double the emissions of the poorest half of humanity

The richest one percent of the world’s population are responsible for more than twice as much carbon pollution as the 3.1 billion people who made up the poorest half of humanity during a critical 25-year period of unprecedented emissions growth, according to Oxfam’s new report, ‘Confronting Carbon Inequality.’

Canadian Climate Accountability Act - we need one!  

Canada has missed every single emissions reduction target it has ever set.  The adoption of a Climate Accountability Act could change that.  The CAA proposal developed by Ecojustice and other organizations would get us on a pathway to a low-carbon future by legislating targets, establishing an independent advisory body, and mandating five-year carbon budgets, impact reports, and climate plans. We need to advocate for a CAA and we need to advocate for increased climate ambition – a target of 60% below by 2030. Call on the federal government to table a climate accountability law in Parliament by the end of 2020.

Axworthy: Trudeau’s rejection of UN Nuclear Ban must be corrected

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau opposes the treaty citing Canada’s NATO membership, which relies on nuclear weapons as part of its military strategy. But Former Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy says that position is inconsistent with Canada’s long history of opposing nuclear weapons, and “must be corrected.”

Ontario should phase out – not ramp up – its gas fired power plants 

Doug Ford wants to ramp up Ontario's gas-fired power plants by more than 300% during the next 5 years blowing us past our climate targets. But there's a better way to keep our lights on – we can invest in conservation, water power from Quebec and made-in-Ontario wind and solar energy. More than 44 citizen groups including the Ontario Clean Air Alliance are calling for a phase out of Ontario's gas-fired power plants by 2030.
