Tues. Oct. 26, noon ET

Toronto City Hall (Queen and Bay)

Join ACORN members as we finalize our push for affordable housing in all new developments. We've been fighting for YEARS for a policy called 'Inclusionary Zoning', that forces new developments to include affordable units. We're close - but developers are pushing back and weakening the requirements while also delaying the rule being enforced.

The Role of Attention in Sustaining a Mindful and Purposeful Lifestyle

Wed. Oct. 27, 2 p.m. ET

With change, uncertainty and overwhelm in our lives, resilience is essential in building our capacity to cope and recover from adversity. With mindfulness or presence as a foundation, we will explore how purpose can get us through the most discouraging days in connecting us to what matters most, giving direction and meaning to our lives. With pivoting, we’ll discuss how to muster the courage and cultivate the wisdom to make proactive changes when needed.  We will also explore how pacing, as in using a wider lens to more clearly identify our purpose, can guide our passage through the different chapters of our lives. Finally, we’ll discuss how to incorporate both informal and formal sustainable practices into our everyday lives.

Enough is Enough: A Key Year Ahead in Protecting Ontario's Environment

Thur. Oct. 28, 6.30 pm ET

Environmental Defence will host a special online evening with David Crombie, former Mayor of Toronto and ex-chair of the Greenbelt Council, and Loreena McKennitt, singer-songwriter and environmentalist, to talk about how we can stand together to protect our province’s future - before it’s too late.

Pulling apart the Endangered Species Act. Abusing Minister's Zoning Orders (MZOs). Eroding Conservation Authorities’ ability to protect wetlands and forests. Rigging planning rules to try to force municipalities into agreeing to pave tens of thousands of acres of farmland and rural areas in one Big Sprawl. Together, these changes tell a story of a government that is systematically dismantling environmental protections to benefit sprawl developers and land speculators - harming the people, land and water of Ontario.

Meanwhile, Ontario’s annual carbon emissions have actually increased since 2019, as the province spent billions of dollars fighting carbon pricing and abandoning renewable energy contracts. All at a time when the effects of climate change are becoming ever more damaging.

Enough is enough. People-power can and has made a difference.  If we act now and we act together we can make this year a turning point for the better.

RBC Day of Action

Friday October 29

As we approach the global climate talks in Glasgow this November, we are coming together to demand “fossil banks” like RBC stop funding fossil fuels. On October 29th, people around the world are planning a day of action against the biggest funders of climate chaos. In Canada, that means Canada’s biggest fossil bank, RBC, needs to feel the pressure from coast to coast to coast. Find an event near you.

In Toronto:

Global Day of Action for Climate Justice

Sat. Nov. 6, 2021

World leaders will meet in Glasgow in November at the global climate talks, COP26. We are organising decentralised mass mobilisations across the world, bringing together movements to build power for system change – from indigenous struggles to trade unions, from racial justice groups to youth strikers. Find your local action here:

https://cop26coalition.org/gda/

Rally for Climate Justice Now! Real Action @ CoP 26

Sat. Nov. 6, 1 pm

Queen's Park, Toronto (University and College)

With recent extreme weather events and new promises made by the Federal government, we must hold our leaders accountable at COP26. The climate crisis threatens our homes, health, and happiness, and promises to exacerbate existing inequalities. Unless significant action is taken, these threats will quickly multiply. The time for business as usual and empty promises is over. We need real action at COP26! Our main demands are: - Indigenous sovereignty - Phase out fossil fuels - Just transition for communities and workers - Global Justice. We need the Canadian government and other Global North countries to move beyond climate negotiations and move toward climate justice. Without the voices of the Most Affected Peoples and Areas, COP26 will not achieve climate action.
