The World

☢ The Russian takeover of the defunct Chernobyl site challenges the ‘peaceful, safe and sustainable’ branding of nuclear energy At least seven forest fires continue to burn around the Russian-held Chernobyl nuclear site in Ukraine, raising fears radionuclides could spread from the defunct facility.

☢ Fossil and nuclear energy regimes threaten global security The Ukraine catastrophe should be enough to halt nuclear expansion in its tracks. Trading one existential threat (fossil fuel dependency) for another (an even wider network of nuclear targets) is a callous, willful betrayal of the public trust by those politicians enabling it.

☢ Chernobyl Radiation Lab Destroyed, Radioactive Forest Fires and History with Kate Brown; and Nuclear Reactors as Targets of War with Paul Dorfman - both Nuclear Hotseat podcasts.

☢ Canada's nuclear industry ‘blindsided’ after exclusion from green bond framework Canada gets it right on Green Bonds. Yes to energy efficiency and renewables. No to costly and delaying nuclear.

☢ Ottawa pours more money into next-gen nuclear tech; critics to push back against ‘dangerous distraction’ Yet another taxpayer handout for phantom SMR technology. This is not green transition, it is green washing. We need climate action now, not empty distractions.

☢ Canada’s Draft Radioactive Waste Policy After many months of waiting for the results of the public consultation from Natural Resources Canada on a new Radioactive Waste Policy for Canada, a draft of the new policy has been released for public comments. The result is disappointing.

☢ Advocacy Group is Sounding the Alarm Over NB Power’s Bid to Renew its Nuclear License for an Unprecedented 25 yrs "An entire generation will have their voices silenced about the nuclear plant”

☢ Saskatchewan's plan to build small nuclear reactors draws mixed reactions At $5 billion each, "I'm shocked that these politicians don't have more business sense." Ann Coxworth, nuclear chemist, said that governments should invest in storage and sharing options for energy created by hydro, wind and solar power.

Ontario

☢ Nordic co-operation, Canadian provincialism The experience of the Nordic countries holds some key lessons. First off, Ontario needs to recognize what its sister province QC has to offer – low cost renewable water power and storage.

☢ The Future We Choose: Ontario must ban gas-fired electricity generation Be sure to ask your candidates in June’s provincial election about their party’s position on gas-fired power generation before deciding who to trust with your vote.

☢ The High Cost of Bad Energy Choices The Ford gov't in ON is ramping up gas power more than 600% and rebuilding old and building new nuclear reactors while killing green energy and conservation programs. In this 90 min. video, Jack Gibbons of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance lays out a plan for getting Ontario to a zero-carbon electricity grid by 2030.

Renewables and Conservation

☼ Energy efficiency guru Amory Lovins: ‘It’s the largest, cheapest, safest, cleanest way to address the crisis’ Lovins is arguing for the mass insulation of buildings alongside a vast acceleration of renewables. “We should crank [them] up with wartime urgency." The most energy-inefficient design of all, he says, is nuclear power, which is heavily subsidized, costly and pushed by a politically powerful lobby.

☼ No more fuel on the fire A Fossil Fuel Treaty can take the heat out of war and build the grounds for peace. “Let's dash into renewable energy at lightning speed."

☼ The Case for Induction Cooking For all the sexiness of cooking with gas (a concept bolstered by aggressive lobbying and advertising from the fossil gas industry), it has been shown to be catastrophic for the environment, emitting potent GHGs like methane into the atmosphere. Worse, a recent study demonstrated that 75% of these emissions occur when the stove is off.

☼ Four Indigenous women to watch in Canada’s fight against climate change The First Nations, Métis, and Inuit are bringing traditional knowledge to the energy industry, replacing diesel with wind and solar, and starting businesses that hold long-term promise for both the environment and local economies.

Take Action

☢ Radioactive waste is forever Tell the Feds to treat it that way. The public comment period is open until April 2, 2022.

☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell Ontario's political leaders that you want investments in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.

☢ Stop the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in NW Ontario High-level nuclear waste should be managed using a "rolling stewardship" concept, rather than abandoning it in a deep geological repository. Learn more. Make a donation to help local organizers educate their neighbours.

☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for new nuclear reactors Tell federal Ministers to stop wasting our $ on polluting nuclear reactors.

Events

☢ Cold War Colonialism: Anishinaabek Responses to Uranium Mining at Elliot Lake Wed. March 30, 7 p.m. ET. In this talk, Dr. Lianne C. Leddy will discuss Serpent River First Nation’s resilience in confronting colonial extractive practices during the Cold War period.

☢ Nuclear power: not fit for purpose? Mon. April 4, 2 p.m. ET. Nuclear power is increasingly marketed as part of the solution to the climate crisis. In fact it’s dirty, dangerous, expensive, won’t help with our climate problems, and there are far more jobs in renewables. Hosted by CND's (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) Trade Union Advisory Group.
