Ukrainian ecologists say nature will suffer no matter war’s result

Due to the war, affected ecosystems suffer soil and water pollution as well as harm from direct impact. The Russians use a carpet-bombing approach, often employing weapons forbidden by the UN, which cause fires across enormous areas. In terms of biodiversity, Ukraine is responsible for one out of every three species under protection in Europe — those found only in Ukraine’s steppe zone where there is military action.

Tax the Polluting Elite

The “polluting elite” – those on the highest incomes – globally vastly outweigh the emissions of the poor. Windfall taxes on excess profits could help to fund low-carbon investment, as well as progressive taxation in countries, including developing countries, which often under-tax rich citizens and companies.

Canada and the Uprising in Peru

Tues. Feb. 7, 7 p.m. ET

On Dec.7 elected left-wing president Pedro Castillo was ousted. Nearly two months after, protests and blockades continue across Peru. Security forces have shot hundreds and killed sixty, mostly indigenous, protesters since Castillo’s ouster. Ottawa immediately backed the ouster and Canada’s ambassador to Peru, Louis Marcotte, has worked to shore up support for Dina Boluarte’s replacement government. Many countries in the region have rejected Boluarte. This event will discuss Canadian and US support for Castillo's removal as well as Canada’s large mining presence in Peru.
