Atomic Accomplice

Speakers (including me) in this recording of a webinar held Mar. 30, 2023 all point to the same conclusion: nuclear power is too costly, cannot deliver power soon enough, and embeds an ominous plutonium/proliferation risk far into the future. It is unworthy of any government subsidies or support.

Germany will complete nuclear phase-out as planned but the technology's risks remain

The era of nuclear power in Germany will end on April 15. Three generations have benefitted from nuclear power use in Germany, but about 30,000 generations will be affected by the ongoing presence of nuclear waste. “Nuclear power has become expendable and that’s good news. Renewable power will take it from here.”

I was an avid traveller, but I stopped flying 20 years ago. You can too

Air travel is responsible for about 2% of global CO2 emissions. Maybe if we all tried to fly more sparingly, and demanded high-speed train service and the restoration of publicly-owned bus services, we would eventually be able to travel with less frustration, and protect the environment at the same time.

Winning 100% Renewable Power for All

Mon. April 3, 7 pm. ET

“Our world needs climate action on all fronts: everything, everywhere, all at once.” These are the words of UN secretary general António Guterres on the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which makes abundantly clear that wealthy countries like Canada have a responsibility to fast-track climate solutions. We couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’re hosting a virtual rally.

Chile: Defeat of a Dictator

Mon. April 3, 7 p.m. ET

In 1983, Chilean workers initiated a wave of nonviolent protests against the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. Severe repression failed to stop the protests, and violent opposition failed to dislodge the dictatorship—until the democratic opposition organized to defeat Pinochet in a 1988 referendum. Brief documentary film followed by expert and discussion.

Fires, Floods, and Terrorism Charges: The escalation of state repression during the climate crisis

Tues. Apr 4, 8 p.m. ET

As global temperatures rise and make record-breaking floods and fires daily headlines, national governments repeatedly protect the corporations that fuel the climate crisis and incarcerate those who challenge them. Around the world the communities that attempt to protect and preserve their environment are increasingly met with terrorism charges, assassination, and egregious human rights abuses. In this international webinar we will explore the questions: Does protecting clean water or taking climate action make you a terrorist? What are the implications of governments labeling their population terrorists for political action? Our panelists include organizers from the youth climate movement in the Philippines, the Palestinian liberation movement, the climate justice struggle in Germany, the Campaign to Free Jessica Reznicek, Indigenous land defense in Honduras, and #StopCopCity in Atlanta GA. The panelists will discuss their experiences with criminalization and how the growing repression of land defenders affects us all.

Great Lakes Under Threat - Indigenous Water Defenders on Line 5

Wed. Apr. 5, 6 p.m. ET

Line 5 is an ecological disaster in the making. This aging, leaky pipeline is due for another rupture at any time - which threatens the Great Lakes, a source of clean drinking water for over 40 million people. For the many Tribal and First Nations who live in the Great Lakes basin, these lands and waters are also culturally and spiritually significant. All 12 Tribes within Michigan have called for a shutdown. Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewas in Wisconsin has a court case against Enbridge to evict them from their tribal lands. The Anishinabek Nation, representing 39 First Nations in Ontario, stands with their Anishinaabeg kin in the U.S. and supports a Line 5 shutdown. Water protectors are standing up against Enbridge to protect the Great Lakes, but more help is needed! Come join us for a moderated virtual discussion about Line 5, the threats it poses, the viable alternatives within reach, and how you can help.
