Reality Check: The IEA Busts 10 Myths About the Energy Transition

Renewables are growing exponentially. The shift is transformative, but also widely undercounted. The International Energy Agency’s latest findings — on renewables’ rise and oil demand peaking — add urgency to this transition.

The Spanish city that banned cars

Pontevedra banned cars in 1999. Not only have they not had a single road-related death in over a decade, but air pollution has been reduced by 67% and our overall quality of life in the city has dramatically improved. Some 15,000 people have moved to the city since it became car-free. The mayor who championed this has been re-elected 4 times. Based on its success with citizens and businesses, European cities are following their lead. "People don't want to live in cities designed for cars: They want cities for people."

Let's Rent a Train – 93 min. video doc

This is an historical film about the rise and fall of a militant revolutionary group - the League for Socialist Action, 1961-1977 - that profoundly altered Canada’s political landscape. During the social upheaval of the 1960s and 1970s, several hundred highly disciplined activists led Canada’s antiwar movement against the U.S. invasion of Vietnam, played a key role in winning the abortion rights struggle, and more.

Fair Shares webinar with Anjali Appadurai, Ceecee Holz, and Meena Raman

Wed. Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m. ET

As the climate crisis intensifies around the world, how is Canada showing up within the international community? The climate crisis is driven by deep histories of colonialism, global capitalism, international trade, geopolitics and imperialism. All of these forces come together to create the political deadlock that we find ourselves in today. This crisis, however, also has a deep history of organized struggle, which began in the Global South where communities have been pushing back against the root causes of this crisis for decades. We need to understand this history and the current global big picture in order to truly understand "Climate Justice". With this international perspective in mind, we can do our local and regional work more effectively.

Nuclear Energy and the Bomb

Thur. Oct. 12, 7 p.m.

St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick

When thinking about energy transitions, the issue of nuclear weapons rarely comes to mind. Yet the connections between generating nuclear energy and the ability to make nuclear weapons have been evident since Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. One connection is separating plutonium from used nuclear fuel, the technology proposed for Point Lepreau in New Brunswick. Other connections include the overlap in technical expertise and institutions.

The Climate Policy We Need

Thur. Oct. 12, 5 p.m. ET

Sat. Oct. 14, 3 p.m. ET

The clock is ticking on a critical piece of climate action. MPs and bureaucrats are negotiating the details of the long-promised Emissions Cap policy behind closed doors right now — and they’re expected to take it public before the year is out. But Big Oil and their lobbyists are pushing hard to weaken and delay this game-changing climate policy — meeting with our politicians as often as 7 times a day to that end. We’re hosting a series of calling parties this week - we'll patch you into MPs from the comfort of your home. If you’ve never participated in a calling party, don’t worry! We’ll provide you with a training and a script, and support you every step of the way.
