Earth’s ‘vital signs’ worse than at any time in human history, scientists warn
Their report found that 20 of the 35 planetary vital signs they use to track the climate crisis are at record extremes.
Many climate records were broken by enormous margins in 2023, including global air temperature, ocean temperature and Antarctic sea ice extent. The highest monthly surface temperature ever recorded was in July and was probably the hottest the planet has been in 100,000 years.
The scientists also highlighted an extraordinary wildfire season in Canada that produced unprecedented carbon dioxide emissions. These totaled 1bn tonnes of CO2. They said the huge area burned could indicate a tipping point into a new fire regime.
“Without actions that address the root problem of humanity taking more from Earth than it can safely give, we’re on our way to the potential collapse of natural and socioeconomic systems and a world with unbearable heat and shortages of food and freshwater. By 2100, as many as 3 billion to 6 billion people may find themselves outside Earth’s livable regions, meaning they will be encountering severe heat, limited food availability and elevated mortality rates.”

World shift to renewables is unstoppable, IEA report says

The world is on an "unstoppable" shift towards renewable energy but the phase down of fossil fuels is not happening quickly enough. The International Energy Agency, the global energy watchdog, predicted renewables would provide half of the world's electricity by 2030.

Golden age of gas. C’est fini

Montreal just took a stand against methane gas. The city is banning gas hookups for most new buildings. “The transition to clean energy is happening worldwide and it’s unstoppable,” says IEA chief.

Nuclear Energy and the Bomb

The link between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons is something many of us know something, but not much, about. If you'd like a good explanation, check out this recent presentation by M.V. Ramana from UBC who clearly explains the links between the two.

Rendezvous with Madness Festival

Oct. 27 - Nov. 5

In person (Toronto) and online

Rendezvous with Madness is the first and largest arts and mental health festival in the world. Using art as the entry point to illuminate and investigate the realities and mythologies surrounding mental illness and addiction, Rendezvous With Madness spotlights the human capacity for endurance in the face of great challenges. This year’s tagline “Mind the Gaps” considers gaps in infrastructure and the systematic “cracks” people, particularly those with lived experience of mental health and addiction, fall through. It is a call to think through what is missing and how things could be better.

Balancing Farmland Protection & Housing Supply

Tues Oct. 31, noon ET

The increasing demand for housing supply and affordability in Ontario is leading to pressure on municipalities to develop their shrinking agricultural land base. At the same time, the need to preserve these food-producing landscapes is becoming increasingly critical in the face of climate change. This session explores the challenges and opportunities faced in balancing the need for housing with farmland protection while contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies for municipalities.
