Dear Mr. Ignatieff, I do not believe that the Government of Canada
should subsidize the construction of two new nuclear reactors at the
Darlington Nuclear Station. Ontario’s electricity needs can be met at
a lower cost, more quickly and more reliably with a combination of
energy conservation and efficiency, wind power, water power from
Quebec and small-scale but highly efficient combined heat and power
plants.

Union backs older 'emission-free' Candu 6
Its support leaves new design out in the cold
A number of voices in the Ontario nuclear community are lobbying the
McGuinty government to abandon its interest in AECL's Advanced Candu
Reactor (ACR) and instead focus on the company's existing Candu 6
design, a smaller reactor that operates in five countries, including
China and Korea.
(Angela’s note: But the Candu 6 doesn’t meet updated Canada Safety
Standards!)
Industry sources have told the Star that Ontario Power Generation
also prefers to build Candu 6 reactors at Darlington rather than
ACRs, which have not been built anywhere in the world and are based
on a design that is not yet complete.
Ontario wants the federal government to take on the financial risks
of building two ACRs before it makes a selection.
The federal government, which is struggling to partially privatize
AECL, wants Ontario to make a commitment so the company's commercial
business looks more attractive to potential suitors.

No nuclear power: rally
Sask. Protesters call for investigation of power options
"Don't decide for us," "Conservation is Cheaper" and "Glow Green or
Go Green" were among slogans hoisted on billboards and shouted
through megaphones as 450 protesters gathered at the Vimy Memorial in
downtown Saskatoon to hear speakers opine on a non-nuclear future.
… Perrins' findings indicate residents want more information on
nuclear power, and the report showed 84 per cent of the 1,400
Saskatchewan respondents oppose nuclear power. Perrins also
recommended the government develop a report on all power generation
options in the province.
